Mom says that baby girl’s nursery is very pink and filled with bows, flamingos, flowers, etc – does anyone else feel like they would love to see that room?? But where does the desire for pink baby girl rooms come from? Historically speaking, babies were dressed in all white regardless of gender because it was easier to clean! In fact, in the earlier times, pink was considered a stronger color and associated with boys whereas blue was considered delicate and associated with girls, even being published in “The Ladies’ Home Journal” in 1918 and department store displays in the 1920s. Consumerism played a role in the shift with it becoming popularized to buy clothes specific to gender and not reuse clothing. The 1940s saw the shift from blue to boys and pink for girls mostly due to popularity of people such as Mamie Eisenhower who preferred pink thus associating the color with femininity. The rise in science’s abilities for prenatal testing and gender reveal parties in the 1980s further solidified the pink-for-girls, blue-for-boys association, as parents would learn and share their child’s gender before birth, bringing about a demand for gender-specific products. Recent times have found parents swaying slightly from pink and blue gender reveals into purples, greens, teals, reds, etc for a twist on the classics. Do you guys think that will gain enough popularity to wash out pink and blue as the main colors for genders? Did anyone do anything outside of the box? Leave a comment!
